Admission Procedure
If our PhD Management programme is the PhD programme of your choice, please have a look at the necessary steps to apply for the programme.
The 3 Steps to your PhD Management Application
1. Finding a Supervisor
In general, if you are intending to apply to a PhD programme, whether it is the PhD Management programme or another offered by the University of Vienna, you should start looking for a supervisor for your dissertation even before applying.
While it is not necessary to declare a supervisor at the point of applying for a PhD programme, it is highly recommended to consider which professors may be suitable supervisors, and to get input whether or not it is feasible that your dissertational project can be supervised at the University of Vienna. While there are a great many academic fields and subjects researched here, this does not automatically guarantee supervision as capacities may vary.
Even the admission to a PhD programme does not mean that you will be granted supervision. Finding a suitable supervisor, contacting them and gaining their approval for a dissertational project is part of your responsibility as a PhD-student.
2. Applying via U:SPACE and Uploading Relevant Documents
What is U:SPACE?
U:SPACE is the University of Vienna's central web portal. It offers a number of services to students, lecturers, researchers, staff, and, in your case, (prospective) PhD-students. In order to use U:SPACE you will need to make an account via http://uspace.univie.ac.at - this will be your so-called u:account.
Once you have created your U:SPACE account, you can log on to U:SPACE and access your personal user space. Here you can apply for admission to degree programmes, register for courses and examinations and pay your tuition fees or ÖH (Austrian Students' Association) fees.
If you would like to apply for admission, please click “Administration” and select “Admission to degree programmes”. Now select “PhD/doctorate” under the header “Apply for a new degree programme”.
Search for the PhD or doctoral programme you would like to apply in the search field below.
Please bear in mind that admission is only possible within the general admission period.
To complete your application you have to upload the following documents:
- Degree certificates of all completed degree programmes (e.g. degree certificates of bachelor's and master’s programmes including all the necessary legislations)
- Diploma supplement and/or transcript of records
- Indication of Willingness to Supervise a Doctoral/PhD Candidate
- Scan of your passport/identification card
- Letter of motivation for your planned research project
- Description of your research project (including research interests and methodological approach)
- Possible references
- Proof of your English skills (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL, Degree from a University that uses English as their institutional language of instruction.)
Please note the following: These documents are to be uploaded in PDF format! Additionally, if your degree certificates, diploma supplements and/or transcript of records were not issued in English or German, it is necessary to provide a translation into either German or English by an officially registered and certified translator.
3. Interview with Members of the Doctoral Advisory Board
This interview presents an opportunity to showcase your knowledge and present your plans regarding your dissertational project. It also allows our faculty members to gain insights into the project, the methodology you plan to use, and which academic preparations have been made. Furthermore the interview should allow the evaluation of your research interests and whether or not these align with the current research areas of the departments involved. Should the topic of your dissertational project not fall into any of those research areas, we will unfortunately be unable to provide supervision.
The interview itself will be organised by our doctoral advisory board and take place at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Statistics at the University of Vienna. You will be informed via e-mail about the specific time and place. You will also be notified via e-mail should any futher written documents be required for the talk (such as references, or an example of your written work).
